Welcome to Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a country located in Western Europe. It is officially known as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Although small, this country is one of the world’s wealthiest and most developed. It had been occupied by many other powerful empires, such as the Roman Empire, France, and Germany; however, this region from 963 AD took its first step toward independence and becoming a distinct land. Considering how small this country is, it has played a significant, powerful role in Europe, as its members at the time held important titles, such as King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor. Later, in 1867, Luxembourg gained full independence, and since then, especially after World War II, this region has become one of the most prosperous countries and has benefitted from both European integration and political stability.

The capital of Luxembourg is Luxembourg City. It is worth mentioning that first the city was named Luxembourg and the country after, which is rare. However, the city’s name was originally derived from the German word “Lucilinburhuc,” which means “Little Fortress,” due to its geographical location in the 10th century. Over time, owing to the significance of the name, it was eventually given to the whole country. Luxembourg City is home to many beautiful destinations, including Bock Casemates, where you can explore the city’s fortifications, full of tunnels and galleries, providing a glimpse of the city’s history. The Wall of the Corniche, also known as the most beautiful balcony in Europe, offers a dazzling view of the lower part of the city. Last but not least, you should visit Place Guillaume II; this square is the center of this city, where you are surrounded by markets, cafes, and various fantastical buildings. Moreover, Luxembourg offers a wide variety of cuisine, so there’s something to satisfy everyone, whether they prefer savory or sweet pastries. The Luxembourgish dishes are also a delightful mixture of French, Belgian, and German influences reflecting the country’s history and culture. Here are some must-try dishes from Luxembourg: Judd mat Gaardebounen, Bouneschlupp, Quetschentaart, and Huesenziwwi.
