Welcome to Iceland

Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean. This region was first discovered in 861 by the Norse Viking Naddodd. Later, in 930, Althing was founded, which is one of the oldest parliaments in the world, and played a huge role in keeping harmony in the country. After that, Iceland was successful in staying independent for a long time, but in the 13th century, with the increasing conflicts within the Althing, it weakened the country enough to get conquered by the Norwegian Rule, then the Kalmar Union, and the Danish Rule. Finally, in 1918, after World War I, Iceland declared independence and became the Kingdom of Iceland, and then in 1944 it became the Republic of Iceland. Henceforth, after World War II, Iceland saw tremendous economic growth and development, focusing especially on renewable energy sources and fishing. This land is mostly renowned for its unique geographical location, rich culture, and stunning landscapes, which have captured the attention of many people around the world.

Reykjavik is the capital and largest city in Iceland and is well-known for its vibrant and stunning nature and its relatively mild climate, cool summer, and mild winter. It is home to over 139K people, which makes it one of the smallest capital cities in the world in terms of population. Reykjavik was first established around 874 and also named by the Norseman Ingolfur; the meaning of Reykjavik is “Smoky Bay,” due to the rising stream from the hot springs in this area. This city is the pinpoint of cultural events, as it hosts many festivals, such as the Reykjavik Arts Festival and Iceland Airwaves Music Festival.

That is not all; it is also well-known for its museums, including the National Museum of Iceland and the Reykjavik Art Museum. Both museums offer a deeper insight into the country’s history and its obsession with art. Architecture is also a vital part of the city; for example, Hallgrimskirkja is one of the most magnificent churches in the city, and Harpa is a stunning concert hall. Or you can have a great time in the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, which offers an amazing experience in the freezing weather. Furthermore, Iceland is also remarkable for its delicious dishes, such as Hangikjot (smoked lamb), Harofiskur (dried fish), and Kleinur (twisted doughnut), perfect when craving sweets.
