Welcome to Estonia
Estonia is a marvelous country situated in northeastern Europe; it shares borders with Latvia and Russia and maritime borders with Finland and Sweden. This region is renowned for its unique location and the various forces’ influences on its culture and history. As a matter of fact, from the 11th century to the 12th century, many attempts were made to spread Christianity in Estonia, and none of them were successful. However, in the 13th century, the German crusaders occupied this region, and since then, Christianity has been the most followed religion. Even though it has been conquered by numerous forces, Estonians never gave up on gaining independence, as their first attempt was in 1918. But it was short-lived, as it was conquered by the Nazi Germany and then the Soviet Union once again. Nonetheless, in 1991, this land finally regained independence, and since then it has been remarkable for its technological innovations and is considered one of the world’s most technologically proficient societies.
Tallinn is the capital and most populated city in Estonia, as it is home to over 461K residents. This city is a mixture of ancient sights and digital advancements. On one hand, it is mostly well-known for its advancement in technology. In 2024, its e-services were rated as the greatest in the world, and this shows how much technological innovation can enhance the quality of life and public services. On the other hand, Tallinn is full of gems of history, and it offers glimpses here and there into what this nation has been through. Tallinn Old Town is an example, as it offers historical landmarks and amazing architecture of the medieval era. Toompea Hill and Castle is another historical sight that is home to many historical artifacts, besides offering a fantastical view of the city. And if you are interested in immersing yourself in the city even more, you should visit Rotermann Quarter, which is a blend of modern and ancient landmarks where you can shop, dine, and sightsee cultural events. That is not all; you should also try these delicious Estonian cuisines, such as Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage served with meat), Wild Mushroom Soup (a creamy soup made from wild mushrooms, which are from Estonia’s forests), and Kama (roasted barley, rye, oat, and pea flour are combined to make this Estonian sweet, which is served with yogurt or buttermilk).
