After that, in 711, Muslim forces occupied this region and made it a center of learning and culture. Later, under the Habsburg dynasty, Spain expanded into a worldwide empire in the 16th and 17th centuries, controlling sizable swaths of Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Then in the 18th century, this country went through a reformation toward a more modernized country, and in the 20th century it transformed to a democratic constitutional monarchy. Finally, in 1986, Spain became a member of the European Union, and since then it has been famous for its contributions of art, science, and industry.
