Welcome to The Czech Republic
The Czech Republic, or Czechia, is an amazing country situated in central Europe. It shares borders with Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Germany. This country is renowned for its rich and extensive history, which is marked with cultural diversity and adaptability to a range of social and political shifts. Even though many various civilizations had inhabited this region, the Czech country began to take shape in the 9th century under the Premyslid dynasty, and later, in 950 CE, the duchy of Bohemia joined the Holy Roman Empire, which played a huge role in the formation of the Czech Republic. Then, the 14th century is considered the Golden Age of Bohemia as Prague city rose to importance as a political and cultural hub throughout this period. Although later this country was conquered by other forces, after World War I, Czechoslovakia (nowadays known as the Czech Republic and Slovakia; two separate countries) declared independence. However, it was short-lived as this region was occupied by Nazi Germany and then the Soviet Union. Finally, in 1993, Czechoslovakia peacefully separated into two countries: Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and gained full independence.
Prague is the capital city of the Czech Republic and has been the capital since 1918. However, at the time it was the capital of Czechoslovakia, and later in 1993, when the two countries split, Prague officially became the capital city of the Czech Republic. Nowadays, it is home to over 1 million residents. Upon visiting this city, it captivates you with its numerous charms, including Prague Castle, which is one of the biggest ancient castles in the world, and it also includes the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, the Golden Lane, and the Old Royal Palace. Then you should visit Petrin Hill, which provides breathtaking views of the city, lovely gardens, and an observation tower that resembles the Eiffel Tower. However, you cannot miss out on visiting Wenceslas Square, which is packed with hotels, shops, and restaurants. While having a great time, you should also try these delicious Czech dishes, such as Svíčková na smetaně (roasted beef in a creamy vegetable sauce and served with bread dumplings), Trdelník (sweet pastry coated with sugar and walnuts), and Koláče (sweet pastry filled with fruit, cheese, or poppy seeds).
