Welcome to Cambodia
Cambodia is a charming country located in Southeast Asia, and it shares borders with Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and the Gulf of Thailand. This country is renowned for its stunning nature, complex history, and diverse culture, which are testaments to its resilience and diligence. In the early ages, from the 1st century to the 9th century, this region was ruled by two kingdoms: Funan and Chenla, when Cambodian culture was heavily influenced by Indian culture. Then, from the 9th century to the 15th century, Cambodia was ruled by the Khmer Empire. This period was marked by its achievements in architecture, including building the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat. However, from the 15th century, this region faced invasions by Vietnam and Thailand, and then it was controlled by French rule. It was not until 1953 that Cambodia gained full independence, and since then it has seen tremendous growth and development.
Phnom Penh is the capital and most populous city of Cambodia and is home to over 2.4 million residents. It is also known as the “Pearl of Asia” due to its marvelous and appealing French architecture. Phnom Penh was first established in 1372 and has been the capital of Cambodia since 1434. It is home to many iconic historical and modern landmarks. Therefore, it has many alluring places to offer its visitors, such as the National Museum of Cambodia. This museum houses many artifacts from various periods of ancient times; by entering this museum, you will be immersing yourself in Cambodia’s history. You can also visit Silk Island (Koh Dach), which is known for its traditional silk weaving. This island is just a short ferry journey from the city and provides a tranquil respite from the bustle of the metropolis. However, if you wish to dive into the culture and the daily life of Cambodian people, then you should visit Central Market (Phsar Thmey) and Phnom Penh Night Market, where you can have a unique experience and it is perfect for shopping, walking, and dining. While enjoying yourself there, you should try these Cambodian cuisines, such as Amok (a traditional dish that is steamed in banana leaves and consists of fish, coconut milk, and kroeung) and Num Banhchok (flavorful fish or chicken soup with fresh rice noodles, frequently topped with herbs).
