Welcome to Belgium
Belgium is an alluring country in Western Europe, and it shares borders with France, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Germany. Due to its location, this country has been the spot for international commerce and politics; not only that, but it also provides an amazing mixture of historical sights and modern advancements, turning it into a magnificent place ideal for exploration. When you enter Belgium, you see that there are not one or two, but three official languages: Dutch, French, and German, and this reflects its rich history. First, the northern part of this land is well known as Flanders, and due to its tight ties with the Netherlands since it was once merged with the Netherlands in 1815, its official language is Dutch. Second, French is another language that is widely spoken in Belguin, and this goes back to 1795, during the French Revolutionary Wars, Belgium was annexed to France, and now the southern part of this country, Wallonia, is French-speaking. Finally, before World War I, a small part of Eastern Belgium belonged to the German Empire; later, after World War I, it was added to Belgium. Therefore, until now, German is an official language as well. Even though Belgium had been conquered multiple times throughout history, in 1830 it declared its independence, and especially after World War II, this country has seen tremendous economic growth.
Brussels is the capital city of Belgium and home to over 1.25 million residents. This city is a perfect blend of culture and history, as French and Dutch are commonly spoken in this city. Brussels is full of surprises and has something for everyone. For example, if you are a history lover, then you should visit Notre-Dame du Sablon, as you can dive deep into the history of this country. If you are an art lover, you cannot afford to miss the Magritte Museum, since it provides René Magritte’s iconic works. After that, you have to visit Les Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, which is among Europe’s oldest shopping arcades and is perfect for a leisurely walk too. Most importantly, you have to visit Delirium Cafe to truly experience Belgium’s culture and have a great time. While having the best time your life, you have to try these Belgian cuisines, such as Waterzooi (a Ghent-style creamy stew made with eggs, veggies, and chicken or fish) and Speculoos (shortcrust biscuits with spices that are typically eaten with coffee).
