Welcome to Bulgaria
Bulgaria is a bewitching country in southeastern Europe on the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It shares borders with Turkey, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece, and Romania. Even though this country was occupied by the Thracians and Romans, in 681 AD, it established its first Bulgarian Empire by Khan Asparuh. This empire developed into a strong Balkan state renowned for its cultural accomplishments and military might. Later, from 1396 to 1878, Bulgaria was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, and its culture and traditions were heavily influenced during this period. However, the revival of Bulgarian national identity led this region to gain independence once again during the 18th and 19th centuries. Although this country declared its full independence in 1908, after World War II, it got occupied by the Soviet Union again. Finally, in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria completely regained its independence, and since then this region has seen tremendous growth and development.
Sofia is the capital and largest city in Bulgaria and home to over 1.29 million people. Sofia is the symbol of Bulgarian history, as the impact of numerous civilizations, such as the Greeks, Romans, Ottomans, and Byzantines, can be seen in this city. Now it is the hub of the economy in Bulgaria, housing various businesses, universities, and institutions. St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral is considered the symbol of this city, and it is one of the oldest cathedrals in the world with its stunning architecture and magnificent interior. Therefore, when you travel to Sofia, this cathedral is a must. If you wish to time-travel further, then you should visit St. George Rotunda. This building dates back to the 4th century, and it is a perfect place for seeing the remnants of human beings from ancient times. You might also love to immerse yourself in the culture of this mesmerizing country; thus, you cannot miss Vitosha Boulevard. This is a well-known pedestrian street where you can walk, shop, dine, and have an ideal view of Vitosha Mountain. While enjoying yourself there, you should have a go at these Bulgarian dishes, such as Banitsa (a classic pastry consisting of layers of filo dough stuffed with cheese, eggs, and occasionally pumpkin or spinach), Kebapche (like kebabs, grilled minced meat sausages are frequently served with lyutenitsa, a spicy vegetable relish), and Baklava (many Middle Eastern cuisines share this delicious pastry, which is constructed of layers of filo dough packed with nuts and steeped in syrup).
